Phoenix Break

As part of the Javascript and HTML5 module we have been working on we have made a breakout clone called Phoenix Break.

In Phoenix Break you play as a phoenix trying to catch and kill a group of soldiers who have stolen your egg. Why? Fucked if we know, we’re too busy trying to code the damn thing. Honestly, Javascript is the worst language I have ever used and the way we have been taught it is insulting at best. A direct quote from the lecturer was;
“And that’s why people hate Javascript. You could use these programs instead.”

So yeah, here’s a screenshot from the game. No ball code yet though.

Signing off on Salvager:Outlaw

So we are pretty much finished with the Game Design module so it is time for Salvager: Outlaw to go on the shelf. Heck, I might actually return to this idea in the future and attempt to make it.

But for now, that’s it.

That isn’t to say that the blog is finished though. We’ve started work on a html game that I’ll be documenting in the following days.

Thank you to everyone who has been following and I hope you continue to follow.

Day 2 (25 hours in)

The first hour of the second day and progress seems to be going backwards. Gotta love programming.

The more I add, the more I have to change and rework.  But I am lucky as my college lecturer David Marshall, (My lecturer from last year) has been helping me with the huge problems I’ve encountered in the past few hours.

So, not much to report just now.

Quick Update

After spending more than an hour straining over the scrolling background I have decided to drop it which means that I will have to juggle some values in order to keep the game hectic. But I actually feel this might make it a bit funner for the player as it means it will be a bit easier to keep an eye on who is about to burst.

Just having to make some quick art assets in order to get menu system working.

Thank god for the Foo Fighters, they are keeping me very calm.

The First Hour

One hour into the project and I have the first drafts of the art assets and have found two background pieces on http://www.freesound.org that fit the game quite well.

The game I have decided to do is a 2D arcade game were the sun has decided it doesn’t like humanity anymore and has decided to try and burn them to ashes. You play as one of the last protectors, Cloud.

You will have to be quick as you must ferry as many people as you can from home, to work, to store and back again. But you cannot just focus on one person as they will notice that the cloud is following them and become upset and move slower.

^ This is the background music that will play when you are doing well.

And here is our faithful protectorate, Cloud. (This is a sprite sheet for his movement, that is why there are three)

I will do my best to rework the art assets once I can.

Gameturbation (solo game jam)

In less than an hour I’ll be starting my 48 hour project. The project itself will be a 2D arcade style game called Cloud Cover (Stay tuned to learn more) and will be made and released on here by 12 pm GMT Monday.

To make the game I will be using Paint.net for all graphical work. Visual studio 2010 (C#) for the programming.

See you all in an hour.

LvL 1 Programmer

First book on Java programming came yesterday and as is to be expected it was delivered in a terrible fashion, simply thrown on the doorstep and left. Least it wasn’t the Xbox I ordered.

So the first steps on the adventure that is programming have begun…. yay…

The book itself is a good thousand odd pages long and may or may not be cursed as after I started reading it I fell drastically ill and had to resign myself to bed.
So on the reading list I now have; The 3DS Max 2012 Bible
                                                         Killer Game Programming in Java
                                                         and Level Up Game Design
And more of those to come next month and the month after and after… ad infinitum.

On a related note, we at Nat20 Games have decided upon the theme and idea behind our game design project but I’m not at liberty to say at the moment. Suffice to say,
“Faster than light meets X-Com in Firefly inspired Space Hulk.”
Hopefully if I can get enough people interested then I’ll be able to persuade them to work with me on actually developing the game.

To show interest in the game just tweet @Natural20Games and leave a comment.
